pioneer celebrates 50 years
Pioneer Landscape Centers, supplier of hardscape materials and landscape supplies, celebrates 50 years in business. Gary Schnurr founded Pioneer Sand in Colorado Springs in 1968 and when looking to retire, he sold the business to JLL Partners Inc., a New York-based private equity investment firm. Pioneer is now headquartered in Highlands Ranch.
Pioneer Sand changed its name to Pioneer Landscape Centers in 2017 when it transformed to a new retail approach that supports both landscape companies and DIY homeowners. “This new store concept is dedicated to outdoor living and represents a next chapter for Pioneer,” says Sagi Cohen, CEO. “We see the opportunity to better serve all customers.”
Cohen thinks consolidation in the industry will continue as large companies, including Pioneer, continue to increase their offerings and geographic range of operations by acquiring other companies. In April, Pioneer boosted its presence in southwest U.S. when it acquired Arizona-based Grand Materials & Supply, making Pioneer the largest full -service materials supplier in Arizona.
“Pioneer is unique,” Cohen notes. “It’s like a ‘farm-to-table’ model. We have a natural product, produce what we supply and source from local quarries.” His vision for the next 50 years is for “Pioneer to be a household name nationwide.”
